How the calculator works
- Taxable income is your salary, less any super included in a package, less the deductions you enter.
- Income tax is calculated on taxable income using the resident brackets, then reduced by the low income tax offset (up to $700).
- Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, reduced for incomes under about $35,000.
- Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5% applies above $105,000 (singles, 2026-27) if you do not hold private hospital cover. See the Medicare levy calculator for families.
- HECS-HELP repayments start above $69,528 of repayment income in 2026-27 ($67,000 in 2025-26). See the HECS repayment calculator for the full breakdown.
- Employer super of 12% is paid on top of your salary and is not part of your take-home pay.

Frequently asked questions
What are the income tax rates for 2026-27?+
For Australian residents in 2026-27: nil on the first $18,200, 15c for each $1 from $18,201 to $45,000, 30c from $45,001 to $135,000, 37c from $135,001 to $190,000 and 45c above $190,000. The 2% Medicare levy is charged on top.
What changed on 1 July 2026?+
The lowest tax rate dropped from 16% to 15% for income between $18,201 and $45,000. Everyone earning more than $45,000 saves $268 a year compared with 2025-26, and people earning between $18,200 and $45,000 save 1c for each $1 over $18,200. The rate is legislated to fall again to 14% from 1 July 2027.
How much tax will I pay on $90,000?+
On a $90,000 salary in 2026-27 a resident pays $17,520 income tax plus a $1,800 Medicare levy, leaving take-home pay of about $70,680 a year before any deductions, HECS repayment or surcharge.
Does the calculator include the Medicare levy?+
Yes. It adds the 2% Medicare levy, including the reduction for low-income earners, and the Medicare levy surcharge if you tell it you do not have private hospital cover. Use the Medicare levy calculator for family thresholds.
What is the low income tax offset?+
The low income tax offset (LITO) reduces the tax payable by people on lower incomes. It is $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less, reduces by 5c for each $1 up to $45,000, then by 1.5c for each $1 until it runs out at $66,667. It cannot reduce your tax below zero.
Why is my payslip different from this result?+
Employers withhold tax each pay using the ATO withholding schedules, which spread offsets and the Medicare levy across the year and do not know about your deductions or other income. The difference is settled when you lodge your tax return, as a refund or a bill.
Is this calculator for foreign residents or working holiday makers?+
No. It uses Australian resident rates only. Foreign residents do not get the tax-free threshold and working holiday makers have their own rates, so a registered tax agent is the safer route if either applies to you.
General information only, not tax advice. Estimates use Australian resident rates published by the ATO (rates last checked 27 September 2026) and assume no other income, offsets or exemptions unless entered. Nothing you enter leaves your browser. For advice on your own situation, speak to a registered tax agent.
