Tax agent lookup
Check a tax agent or BAS agent is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board. Search by name, business name or 8-digit TPB registration number.
Why check a tax agent's registration?
Only registered tax agents can charge you to prepare and lodge a tax return, and only registered BAS agents can charge for BAS services. Registration means the Tax Practitioners Board has checked their qualifications, experience, insurance and that they are a fit and proper person, and that they must follow the Code of Professional Conduct.
What to look for
- An 8-digit registration number that matches the name on the official register.
- A status of Registered, with no sanction you are not comfortable with.
- Whether they are a tax agent or a BAS agent, as a BAS agent cannot lodge your income tax return.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a tax agent is registered?+
Search their name or TPB registration number above, then confirm on the official Tax Practitioners Board public register, which is the authoritative source. A registered tax agent should be able to give you their 8-digit registration number.
Does a tax agent have to be registered?+
Yes. Under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009, only a registered tax agent can charge a fee to prepare or lodge your tax return or give you tax advice for a fee. BAS agents must be registered to charge for BAS services.
What is the difference between a tax agent and a BAS agent?+
A registered tax agent can provide the full range of tax agent services, including preparing and lodging income tax returns. A registered BAS agent is limited to BAS services such as GST, PAYG withholding and payroll reporting.
What does "Renewal application lodged" mean?+
The practitioner has applied to renew their registration and remains registered while the Tax Practitioners Board considers the application.
What does a sanction mean?+
The Tax Practitioners Board can sanction a practitioner, for example with a written caution, an order or a suspension. Check the official TPB register for the details and whether any conditions apply.
What if I cannot find my tax agent?+
Our copy of the register is an extract dated 25 September 2026, so check the official TPB register for anyone registered or renamed since. If they are not on the official register either, ask for their registration number, or choose a registered agent instead.
